The OSU Campus Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training Program
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students.  To minimize the incidence of suicidal behavior among Ohio State students, the OSU Campus Suicide Prevention Program is offering a free training program to all OSU groups interested in learning more about suicide prevention and intervention.

According to the U.S. Surgeon General's National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (2001), a "gatekeeper" is someone in a position to recognize a crisis and intervene appropriately. Campus suicide prevention gatekeepers can include parents, friends, student group leaders, coaches, neighbors, teachers, ministers, doctors, nurses,
supervisors/employers, police officers, advisors, facilities staff, and others who are strategically positioned to recognize and refer someone at risk for suicide.

In as little as one hour, one of our certified gatekeeper training instructors can teach your staff or group about prevention and early intervention techniques designed to help save a life from suicide.  Specifically, each gatekeeper training session will provide the necessary knowledge and skills required to:

• Recognize warning signs and risk factors for suicide
• Identify three steps to help prevent a death by suicide
• Understand the role of depression and mental illness
• Replace fear with positive action
• Talk to someone about suicide
• Locate available campus and community resources and support

Following the training, participants will receive certificates verifying their completion of the program.
To request a free training session, please fill out a training request form, located at http://ehe.osu.edu/paes/campussuicideprevention/training.htm. If there is a specific instructor you would like to conduct your training, please select his or her name from the drop-down menu; otherwise, please select “no preference”.  Preferences will be honored when possible.  In the open text box, please enter specific dates or a time frame when you would like the training to take place.  Also indicate the size of the group you would like trained.  Thank you for your interest in preventing suicide!
