World Suicide Prevention Day

Tuesday, September 10, 2024

World Suicide Prevention Day is September 10, established in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention with the World Health Organization (WHO). The purpose is to raise awareness around the globe that suicide can be prevented and is a call to action that encourages everyone to help reduce stigma around suicide and mental health.

This theme also emphasizes the need to prioritize suicide prevention and mental health in policy making, advocating for an increase in access to care and providing support for those in need.

You play a role in suicide prevention as well. This is a responsibility shared by all of us, and we can create a campus community where we shift from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness, understanding and support.

Thank you to our partners, Dining Services and the Department of Psychology! Here are ways to help create a campus culture of care on September 10th:

  1. Watch for stickers on all campus food delivery orders (including the Dining Robots), for uplifting positive messages and ways you can help create a campus culture of care for all Buckeyes. You may also find an extra t-shirt surprise if you have your meal delivered by a Dining Robot.

  2. Request a free swag bag containing items such as magnets, crisis cards, posters and more by emailing osusuicideprevention@osu.edu.

  3. Join the 28,000+ students, staff, and faculty certified in REACH!

    • Become a REACH© suicide prevention gatekeeper by visiting go.osu.edu/REACH to learn more and register.

  4. Share the other resources available on campus and in the community for immediate mental health assistance.

    • Call/text 988, text “HOPE” to 741741, or call 911 for 24-hour support. OSU Counseling & Consultation Service can be reached at 614-292-5766 or ccs.osu.edu.
